It has been deeply disturbing and alarming to see reports of an amendment being made to Bill C-9, which is supposed to be a fair reform to our Criminal Code to fight the rise in hate across Canada. Instead, the proposed amendment amounts to the implementation of a sinister regime of censorship, a gag order forced down the throats of religious communities in this country. It must be stopped. The amendment to erase good-faith religious exemption in Bill C-9 is an attempt to destroy the fabric of religious freedoms and life in Canada, period. Our Criminal Code has always recognized that religious texts, including the Bible, the Qur’an, and the Torah, are not criminal in any way, and must not be criminalized. The amendment turns everyday theological discussion into a crime.Canadians of all walks of life could face investigation or prosecution simply for quoting, teaching, or discussing passages from their own sacred scriptures.Please do the right thing.
